I'm running Win 7 and I'm using my HP 1100A everyday. Here's the problem. I installed that printer over a year ago and the update feature in the 'installprinter' function worked back then.
It doesn't work any more on the Win 7 I'm trying to set up now, from which I am inferring that MS just shut it off deliberately to make it unavailable. We have these printers on every desk in our officeand each one has the copier attachment. I have tried extracting the drivers out of my own terminal; but, that doesn't work either. I don't have a solution.
Downloading the Vista driver from MS's website doesn't work anymore either.Talk about a conspiracy. Mulder should look into this. I know this is an old thread; but, I hope it helps someone.
I'll check back here from time to time in case anyone has any questions or comments. Okay, this is an update from last Thursday. Absolutely, positively, there is a way to installthe HP LaserJet 1100 on a Win 7 64 bit OS. I just did it, albeit after a week. Nothing I read on the Internet has worked. Driverextractor.com didn't work. The.cab files from MS didn't work.
Here's what worked. Connectedthe printer through a USB cable. I went to Device Manager and the printer was detected under 'Other'.
Ordinarily, printers don't show up in Device Manger after the drivers are installed and working. I clicked 'Other' toexpand it and then I right clicked the printer icon and selected 'Update Driver Software'. What comes next won't work for everyone, which will become obvious as you read further. The computer I'm installing the printer on is partof an office network; so, to update (install) the 'driver software', I followed a path over our network to my own computer that had the same printer working. I'm the network administrator; so, I had all the necessary share privileges foraccess. The path was as follows: 'networkmecwindowsSystem32DriverStoreFileRepository'. Just select 'FileRepository' but don't open it and don't select anything inside it.
If there's an option to select or include'subfolders', do it. Then I clicked 'Next' and it started grinding away. After a couple minutes, I got the '.successfully installed.' I don't remember the exact syntax. I couldn't believe itworked; so, I looked in 'Devices and Printers' and the 1100 icon was there. I even looked in 'Add a Printer' and it was there too. Lastly, I opened and printed the first.txt doc that I could find and it (unbelievably) worked. If you don't have the network option that I have, you should be able to copy that 'FileRepository' folder from any Win 7 machine or hard drive that has a working LaserJet 1100 installed.
I checked the size of mine and it's a little over1 gig. That would fit on most any thumb drive. I think a better way to install this printer is through an HP Jetdirect 300x. You can get those for cheap on EBay. I like it because you can use the original parallel printer cable insteadof the USB to Centronix converter cable. This also allows the printer to be anywhere because it's connected to your network through an Ethernet switch or router.

It took a while to figure out how to get it to work; but, now it's working. Thanks for coming back with the update.
It doesn't seem so long ago that I too was able to install a Win 7 x64 driver for the LaserJet 1100 using Windows Update where the printer was listed as 'HP LaserJet 1100 (MS)'- but, as you say, no longer.(On checking I see I installed it in February 2016.)I haven't yet figured out how to use your method in the situation where my LJ 1100 has no USB port, only an LPT which is connected to a Print Server. It is happily installed to operate via this server on another PC running Windows 7. At least you've givenme some clues, including the fact that the correct driver is sitting a mere few feet away if I can only find out how to access it. (Of course it won't show up in Device Manager because it's got the print server interposed between it and the new computer onwhich I want to install it.)You've certainly saved me hours of fruitless jumping around useless web links and for that I'm very grateful.
